Attempts to paint a portrait of the parson at various stages of his career, to catch a glimpse of the Saxon and medieaval cleric, to see the bishop in his palace, to show what kind of cleric ruled in Elizabethan and later times, to picture him in the pulpit and among his flock, in his sufferings and in his successes and to discover what other men have written about him. Square, tight copy which has faded slightly to spine strip and covers. A little foxing to endpapers and some pencil annotation to text. Colour frontis + 16 other b/w illustrations. A good working copy. Reading Copy/No Jacket.
