Unclipped illustrated dustjacket, not price-clipped. In the Spring of 1861, a Russian aristocrat spent sixteen days in London. At his request, Matthew Arnold, the poet, who was then a senior official in the Department of Education, gave him a letter of introduction to a number of schools for the children of the artisan and tradesman class. Arnold referred to him in the letter simple as 'A Russian gentleman, Count Leon Tolstoy.' It was not until two years later that he began 'War and Peace'. Victor Lucas has written a detailed account of life & education in mid-nineteenth century London & throws light on aspects of Tolstoy's character. Very Good/Fine.
