ALMANAC.
[c. 1781]. Small 12mo, 115 x 69 mms., pp. 48, and, in sequence, engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page, double page "Hemisphere Orientale" (contemporary hand-coloured), double-page "Hemisphere Occidentale" (also contemporary hand-coloured), double-page map of France (contemporary hand-coloured), double-page "Cartes Generale des Routes de France," folding "Table de las distances des principales villes du Royaume entr' elles," 8 leaves after text, 7 with notes and annotations on recto and verso, followed by folding engraved plan of Paris (lightly coloured), another of the environs of Paris (lightly coloured; short tear at inner margin partially mended), folding engraved plan of Versailles, concluding with six leaves of calendar for 1781, attractively bound in contemporary red morocco, gilt ruled border on coves, spine ornately gilt in compartments, green morocco label, all edges gilt, and on fore-edge three loops to hold pencil with gilt edges matching gilt board edges. A fine and intriguing copy, with copious annotations by its English owner. The first annotation is on the verso of the leaf before the title-page: "Mrs Johnson/ a set of Chimes in/ London about [?30s.]/ or Six pound/ to be blue & white". There are further annotations (mostly in ink, a very few in pencil) in English on the blank rectos and versos of the maps, detailing a journey, dining with friends, with, starting n page 40, a series of rather limp riddles, e. g., "Why is Ireland like a bottle of Wine? because it's a Cork in it." Six blank leaves after the numbered leaves also contain similar riddles, as well as an acrostic, and some other curiosities. Finally, on the verso of the last blank leaf in a different hand is the note, "I do affirm that/ The [illeg.] was written/ by M [?G] W in Jany/ 1800...."
