Originally published in 9 fascicules between 1858 and 1859, each consisting of 8 pages of letterpress (unpaginated) and 4 fine lithographic plates printed on grey paper. Joseph Maclise (c.1815-1880?) studied medicine at University College, London, and continued his anatomical studies in Paris at l'École Pratique, L'Hôpital le Pitié, and subsequently settled into medical practice in London.
