A superb sepia illustrated front cover by John Brandard which shows the Russian guns on top of the Heights of Alma and the hand to hand fighting by French, English and Scottish troops against the massed troops of Russia, moving up the hill.Whilst more troops gather in the valley below. This first major battle of the Crimean war was fought out on 20th September 1854. The composer Albert Lindahl remains somewhat obscure though here composing for Jullien in the mid 1850's and he composed a Nocturne for Chappell's in the late 1890's and again in the mid 1850's Chappell's published a series 'Eight Favourite Melodies'. The Royal Academy of Music collection holds The Water Nymph from that series and they date it 1856. Lithogarphic artist, John Brandard (1812-1863) specialised in Waltz, Polka covers and worked extensively with master printers Michael and Nicholas Hanhart to produce these opulent sheets as is the case here.
