With a monochrome front cover of the singer Gassier by Rosenthal.Josefa Gassier(1821-1866) was born in Spain and in 1855 she was the toast of the season at Drury Lane as Amina in Il Barbiere. She introduced Ah Che Assorta into the opera and it became known as the Gassier vocal waltz and was composed by the minor Venetian composer Venzano. In the autumn of 1855 she sang in Louis Jullien's concerts. The English translation is The Forest Fairy. The authors of the piece are otherwise obscure. The front cover and the printing is by S. Rosenthal. Rosenthal was much in vogue as a designer in the late 1840/early 50's and was unusual as an illustrator who was also an expert printer. His work was much admired by John Ruskin the English author who used him to illustrate his book The Stones of Venice(1851).Louis Jullien(1812-60) was a remarkable showman, composer, publisher, concert organiser who dominated music in the 1840's to the late 1850's. Folio size with music. Condition VG.
