SMITH ALBERT.: The Medical Student.
London ,Leoni Lee & Coxhead. c early1850's. With a delightful witty monochrome lithographic portrait of a medical student by John Brandard (1812-1863) who specialised in Waltz,Polka covers and is particularly admired for his ballet and opera covers. Humourous examples of his work are rather unusual not to say rare. The composer /lyric writer Albert Smith who died in 1860 ran popular entertainments at the Egyptian Hall London between 1851-58 that centred upon his feat of climbing Mont Blanc but also he probably had music ,dance and song within them, Certainly J.H. Tully wrote The Mont Blanc Quadrilles and C.R. Cooke the Chamouni Polka in celebration of Smith and his entertainments which were as popular in London as Madame Tussauds..Folio size with music. Repaired cover through lithograph and rather worn along outer and bottom edge & slightly foxed else Fair. However a rare humourous cover by Brandard.
