London, 1669-1670 12 monthly issues bound together (a complete year), NO TITLE PAGES, numbered 45-56, March 1669 - February 1670, printed for John Martyn, the printer"s details are at the foot of the last page of each part. Small 4to, 5 folding engraved plates and 1 folding map, pages, 893-1142 plus 4 pages of table and 4 pages of publisher"s catalogue, bound in contemporary blind panelled calf with ornaments at corners, rebacked with maroon lable with gilt lettering and rules between raised bands. Binding scuffed and darkened near to spine, corners worn, light cup ring to upper cover, modern bookplate on first pastedown, neat ink name and date on first free endpaper, 3 small neat repairs to blank side of folding map, small neat repair to folding plate of the woman with the swollen breasts, small neat repair with archival tape to fold of Wren"s engine and a few edges of outer margins of the plates are slightly ragged but not affecting the image, top edge of pages 1038 and 1039 have tears with slight loss of text, affecting the last words on the first 4-5 lines, mostly still legible, top margins slightly trimmed which occasionally affects the numbers, occasional light staining to upper margins, some outer margins a little dusty with the occasional small pale stain or fox spot, otherwise a good copy of a scarce item WHICH INCLUDES 2 ARTICLES CONNECTED WITH SIR ISAAC NEWTON, SEE THE BABSON REFERENCE BELOW. Some articles included in this volume are: A Summary Account of the Laws of Motion, communicated by Mr Christian Hugens in a letter to the R. Society, written in Latin; followed by, An Account Concerning the Resolution of Equations in Numbers imparted by Mr. John Collins; Tractatus de Corde, item de motu & Colore Sanguinis etc by Richard Lower; An Observation made at Paris , the 17th August 1668 at night by M. Hugen and Picart; Instructions Concerning the use of Pendulum -Watches for finding Longitude at Sea; Observations concerning Japan; Observations concerning Bath-Springs by Joseph Glandvill; Some inquiries concerning the Eruptions of Mount Aetna; A Description of Dr Christopher Wren"s Engin, designed for grinding Hyperbolical Glasses; The extracts of two letters, one written from Paris concerning some transactions there relating to the transfusion of Blood; A Learned Treatise concerning the Doctrine of Motion by J. Wallis; Some Observations Concerning the Baroscope and Thermoscope by Wallis and Beal; An Account of a small tract, entitled Thomas Hobbes Quadratura Circuli etc; and many other short articles. "The Philosophical Transactions was the earliest scientific journal, they consisted at first of a small monthly pamphlet of about 20 pages. The contents included extracts or paraphrases from letters written to Oldenburg or reports to the Society, and book reviews. It was about the middle of the eighteenth century that the responsiblity for the transactions was officially assumed by the Royal Society". Images sent on request.
