FIRST EDITION WITH THESE ILLUSTRATIONS, LIMITED EDITION, small 4to, 7¾ x 6 inches, 198 x 155 mm, bound in mid brown velvet over boards, with brown paper label inset in upper cover, decorated and lettered gilt (to imitate a leather label), 37 pp. Delightful mounted colour frontispiece and 5 very charming colour plates, all mounted. Fine copy of a very scarce book, in original plain glassine wrapper, (wrapper has 3 short closed tears to lower edge). This wonderful timeless story was first illustrated in 1922 by William Nicholson and more recently by Michael Hague and Anthony Maitland. The illustrations were specially commissioned for this deluxe edition, limited to 1500 unnumbered copies, printed on Arches paper. There is no trade edition and it was never published in the U.K. Marie Angel was born in London in 1923 and studied art at the Croydon School of Arts and Crafts and the RCA Design School. She worked as a free-lance calligrapher and illustrator, who has done much work for U.S. publisherts. Her commission from Harvard College Library to produce bestiaries led to invitations to illustrate children's books for various publishers. In particular for Warne she illustrated Beatrix Potter's The Tale of the Faithful Dove and The Tale of Tuppenny. Images sent on request.
