FIRST EDITION, 2 volumes, complete set, Edinburgh, Oliver and Boyd, circa 1810. 12mo in sixes, 145 x 85 mm, 5¾ x 3½ inches, 24 uncoloured woodcut costume plates including 2 frontispieces, pages 159; 163, (1) - Directions to Binder, bound in contemporary quarter green roan over marbled sides, gilt rules and lettering to spines. Small chip at tail of spine on Volume II, corners very slightly worn, name and date of 1819 on front pastedowns, small light brown stain in margin of frontispiece, on title page and next page of Volume I, otherwise contents clean and bright, small closed tear to rear endpaper in Volume I. Binding tight and firm. A very good set. Intended for the young, a copy of Volume I only is listed in Gumuchian Livres d'enfance XVe - XIXe siecles, No.4555, but it is not in the Osborne catalogue of children's books. Neither the first edition nor the second edition were dated, but the second states the edition on the title page. Countries described include Australia, Congo and Guinea, Persia, Egypt, Ceylon, Japan, Mexico, China, Peru, Tahiti, California, Canada. In Volume I pages 95-159 are taken up by Anecdotes (Mandingo Negroes and the Lion; Egyptian Monks; Tiger Hunt in Hindostan; Anecdotes of the Missouris; Deplorable Situation of the Jews in Morocco; Severity of the Police in Constantinople; Extraordinary Instance of Courage in a Woman, etc). In Volume II pages 89-163 are taken up by Adventures (Adventures of Madame Godin in the Country of the Amazons; Account of the Shipwreck of Mr Follies, and his Captivity among the Moors; Hardships endured by four Russian Sailors on the Island of Spitzbergen; Extraordinary Adventures of William Bontekoe, etc).
