Giving an account of the undertakings, studies, and labours of the learned and ingenious in many considerable parts of the world; from the first institution of that illustrious Society in the year 1665, to the year of our Lord 1735 inclusive. The whole carefully abridged from the originals, and the order of time regularly observed, with a translation of the Latin tracts, and the theoretical parts applyed to practical uses; also an explanation of the terms of art as they occur in the course of the work. Being a work of general use to the publick, and worthy the perusal of all mathematicians, artificers, tradesmen, &c. for their improvement in various branches of business. First edition, printed by G. Smith, and sold by T. Cooper, and W. Shropshire, 1741. Small 4to, 200 x 125 mm, 8 x 5 inches, 12 engraved plates, 11 folding, 473 pages plus 5 pages of index, rebound in modern plain dark blue cloth, gilt rules and lettering to spine. Occasional light age-browning to pages, 2 small margin corners torn off, occasional small light stain, a couple of pages slightly foxed. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Baddam published his abridgement of the first 70 years of the Philosophical Transactions in 10 volumes, 1738-41, all of which are now scarce. They contained a compilation of important articles on the latest advances in science and technology, plus various travels and explorations. This volume contains articles on astronomy, meteorology, ambergris, mathematical and scientific instruments, earthquakes in New England and England, an arithmetical machine with engraved plate, please see image on listing, gravity, experiments on electricity, the vibration of pendulums, remedies for snake bites, surgery, experiments on mercury (Boerhaave), improvements to the diving bell, fauna of New England, Peruvian or Jesuits Bark, the solution of Kepler's problem, magnetical experiments (Desaguliers).
