Spine slightly faded, gilt slightly dull, light wear to head and tail of spine and corners, 1 small water spot on upper cover, endpapers replaced at some time, some pages lightly browned in the margins, otherwise a very good clean tight copy of a rare book. The contents consist of 5 parts: I. Expedition to the Hawaiian (Sandwich) Islands, under Captain G.L. Tupman.--II. Expedition to Egypt, under Captain C. Orde Browne.--III. Expedition to the island of Rodriguez, in the Indian Ocean, under Lieutenant Charles B. Neate.--IV. Expedition to Kerguelen Island, under the Reverend S.J. Perry.--V. Expedition to New Zealand, under Major H.S. Palmer, plus Appendix. Airy was Astronomer Royal from 1835 to 1881 and had a very distinguished career in that position. He organized the efficient and accurate observation of stellar positions. He wrote many governmental reports on astronomical and other subjects, published works on celestial mechanics, and made discoveries in theoretical and practical optics, including the cylindrical lens for correcting astigmatism, an eye defect he himself possessed.
