First edition, Dean & Son, (1883), 225 x 175 mm. 9" x 7", coloured illustrations to every page, with text in verse, 30 pages, cloth backed glazed boards with small illustration of 2 children playing tennis, floral patterned endpapers. Tiny nick to cloth at head of spine, corners and board edges slightly worn, endpapers lightly browned, neat old inscription on presentation page which is slightly foxed, occasional light foxing to contents, binding tight and firm. Overall a very good bright copy of a scarce lawn tennis book, just 3 copies located in the major U.K. libraries. Lawn tennis dates back to 1873, so this children's book published 10 years later is an early work reflecting the new sport. The story of the tiny lawn tennis club occupies the first 8 pages and includes 2 full page coloured illustrations of children playing a doubles match. The rest of the book consists of verses for children on a variety of topics (The Little Housekeeper, The Naughty Kitten etc), only one of which refers to tennis, The Fairies Tennis Match with a small illustration.
