Binding tight and firm. A very good copy. Sir Bartle Frere (1815-1884) was one of the leading 'Indian' statesmen of the Victorian age. He spent most of his career in India and rose to become the legendary Governor of Bombay during the 1860s. He was a leading exponent against slavery and in 1872 was sent by the foreign office to East Africa and in particular to Zanzibar and Muscat to negotiate treaties for the suppression of the slave trade. The correspondence in Part I concerns this mission and the map shows the places visited by Frere in the course of it. The Royal Commission on Fugitive Slaves was appointed to 'inquire into and report upon the nature and extent of such international obligations as are applicable to questions as to the reception of Fugitive Slaves by our ships in the territorial waters of foreign States, and into all instructions from time to time issued to the Commanders of our ships relative thereto...'. Part of the report consists of accounts of slavery persisting in various countries, in particular in Brazil, in the Persian Gulf and East Africa. Images sent on request.
