A COLLECTION OF THE MOST FAVORITE COMIC SONGS, sung at the Theatres Royal and Public Meetings by Messrs Johnstone, Emery, Fawcett, Munden &c.
London. sung at the Theatres Royal and Public Meetings by Messrs Johnstone, Emery, Fawcett, Munden &c. London, published and sold by C. Wheatstone, no date, circa 1807. 8vo, 210 x 145 mm, 8¼ x 5¾ inches, pages (3), 2-60, originally bound in roan backed marbled boards. Now completely disbound, covers in 2 pieces and worn at corners, spine lacking, needs rebinding, first 4 pages and pages 41 to 56 loose, pages lightly browned, small red ink mark in 1 inner margin, tiny hole in 1 page with loss of 1 letter. A very scarce collection of comic songs, only 1 copy located in the major U.K. libraries, held by Oxford, no copy in the British Library which has a later 3 volume edition with different singers listed on the title page. Our collection consists of 29 songs for voice and piano, printed on 2 staves, with an index of titles. They are a very mixed bunch. At least 4 have an Irish flavour (Murphy Delany, Sprig of Shillelah, The Boys of Kilkenny, Paddy McShane's Seven Ages etc), some are patriotic (The Calender of British Victory, The Corsican Fairy - Napoleon), one is anti-semitic (The Doctrine of an Israelite - about a cheating pedlar), one is naval (Blue Peter at the Mast Head Flew). Some are comically amorous, one man sings of his mistress, the bottle, another steals a nun away from the convent. Images sent on request.
