THE BOOKE OF COMMON PRAYER, and administration of the sacraments, and other rites and ceremonies of the Church of England.
London. London, printed by Robert Barker, printer to the Kings most Excellent Majestie, 1605. Large 8vo, 290 x 190 mm, 11¼ x 7¼ inches, numerous large pictorial and decorated initial letters, title page printed red and black within wide decorative border, text printed mainly in black letter, separate title page to the Psalter, sig. a12-B8, A8-B10, C8-Q6 (Q6v is a blank), A8-K8, bound in full polished calf, decoratively panelled in blind to covers, raised bands and blind stamped decoration to spine, 2 gilt lettered morocco labels, all edges red, marbled endpapers. The volume has benefitted from the care of an expert restorer. Both title pages and P7 are very good facsimiles, the two title pages mounted on a narrow tab at the inner edge, the Psalter title repaired at top edge. Tail of spine and hinges rubbed, small repairs to 3 corners of covers, few light scuffs to covers, large corner torn off a1 and expertly repaired with a facsimile piece, no loss of text, some small rusty stains in margin of a3, neat name at top of a4 which is dusty, 4 ink digits at top of a5, some pages lightly browned, some ink writing on blank after calendar, hole 20 mm (¾ inch) in B2 with loss of 2 words, small pale damp-stain in 3 top margins and in 4 lower margins, large pale damp stain affects 7 leaves, expert paper repairs to 3 worn fore-edges, 2 top edges and 1 lower corner, no loss of text, occasional small light brown stain to margins. In first half of the book the initials have been water-coloured neatly at some time, slight paint smudge in 1 margin. Binding tight and firm. Overall a very good copy of an early King James Common Prayer Book. See David N. Griffiths, The Bibliography of Common Prayer 1549-1999, page 83, 1605 No.2 ('your afflictions' last line of A1). Images sent on request.
