Early edition (first published in 1678), small 8vo, 170 x 100 mm, 6.75" x 4", royal coat of arms on title page, 271 pages, bound in full antique leather, blind tooled decoration to covers, raised bands to spine, no label or lettering. Upper hinge starting to crack at head and cracked at tail, head of spine worn with tiny chip to lower hinge at head, covers rubbed and slightly scuffed, few scratches to upper cover, corners slightly worn, inner paper hinges cracked, neat name on front endpaper with date of 1742, name again at top of title page, title page has some pale brown stains, some pages lightly age-browned, occasional foxing, mainly to margins, 2 tiny chips to 1 fore-edge margin, occasional pale brown stain, few minor ink marks to 1 page, binding tight and firm. A good copy of a scarce book. The book is a manual containing sets of instructions for different military procedures such as forming a battalion with pikemen and musketeers, charging the musket, charging with the pike, drawing up a battalion and placing the officers for a parade to receive the King, the exercise of grenadiers on foot and on horseback, setting up camp, maintaining a garison, courts martial.
