Small 8vo, 150 x 95 mm, 6" x 3.75", hand coloured engraved pictorial title page, 71 engraved plates of coats of arms all beautifully hand coloured, no text other than captions, bound in full antique mottled calf, rebacked at some time, gilt decorated spine laid on, gilt lettered morocco label, original endpapers retained. covers and corners slightly worn, endpapers browned along edges, neat inscription at top of title page, contents very bright and clean. A very good copy, binding tight and firm. Most plates have just 1 armorial device but some have 2 and some have 4. Under each is the name of the owner and in the case of the single coat of arms this is followed by a detailed description of how it is made up. The hand colouring is very bright and very well executed. Bound with another heraldic item: LIVRE DU BLAZON contenant une emple explication des metaux et couleurs avec leurs significations, les huict points de l'ecu des differantes couronnes et tenants &c. Pour l'usage des Armoiries. Paris, Vaneck, circa 1750. Engraved hand coloured pictorial title page followed by 5 pages of engraved text, 16 hand coloured plates of escutcheons and armorial devices with no text other than captions, the last 3 plates pasted together to form a folding plate ( as in all other copies we have found). Contents bright and clean, final plate has a vertical misfold to the left of the images. The two books are from the same publisher although the 'h' in Vanheck is omitted on the Livre du Blazon.
