Charles Augustin Sainte Beuve (1804-1869) was the foremost French literary critic of the nineteenth century. One of his best known works is a history of Port Royal, a celebrated Benedictine abbey which profoundly influenced the religious and literary life of France during the seventeenth century. Robert Arnauld d'Andilly (1589-1674) the author of the letters in our book, was from a famous family the history of which is intimately connected with that of Jansenism and of Port Royal. He retired to Port Royal for the last thirty years of his life. His 299 letters are addressed to many famous personalities from both religious and secular life. It seems likely that Sainte Beuve would have used this collection of letters in his researches for his Histoire de Port Royal. Images sent on request.
