This is No. XXXI. 305 x 185 mm, 12" x 7.25", frontispiece and 185 woodcut illustrations, 284 pages, attractively bound to style in full morocco, dark brown triple rules and 4 small motifs to covers, raised bands to spine, dark brown rules and lettering. In excellent condition in publisher's cloth bound slipcase, showing no wear. This is the first facsimile of Caxton's Fables of Esope and it reproduces (original size) the unique perfect copy of the work in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle. Caxton made his translation from a French version published in Lyons in 1480 and the illustrations were modelled on those in the same book.
