First edition, 260 x 180 mm, 10.25" x 7", 24 fine engraved plates, 2 folding, pages (x), xvii, 405, (37); (viii), viii, 401-828, (28), 13, French text, bound in contemporary polished calf, triple ruled gilt border to covers, gilt decorated raised bands to spines, richly gilt in compartments, 2 gilt lettered morocco labels, edges and endpapers marbled. Bindings worn and slightly stained, upper hinge cracking at top and bottom on Volume I, lower hinge cracking at top and bottom on Volume II, covers securely attached, spines slightly chipped at head and tail, small leather repair to spine on Volume II, small hole in surface on both covers of Volume I, endpapers, half-titles and title pages lightly browned in margins, a few pages age-browned, occasional brown spot, browning to lower margin of last 2 pages in Volume I, 4 pages foxed in Volume II, contents otherwise very nice. Bindings tight and firm, no loose pages. A good clean set of this scarce book on surgery. Georges Arnaud de Ronsil had studied medicine at the Collège de Saint-Come and had later established himself in London where he built up a reputation as a surgeon. The work contains 11 memoires or papers on different surgical subjects. It opens with a short life of William Hunter with translations into French of his papers on hernia and aneurism with 4 splendid plates drawn by Jan van Rymsdyck. There are also papers on testicles, on hermaphrodites with 6 plates devoted to the subject, 2 further papers on aneurisms. 3 deal with surgical instruments, the first of these describes and illustrates on 5 plates a specially designed chair in which the patient is to be strapped for surgery to be performed.
