First edition with chromolithograph plates, first published in 1877 with uncoloured plates, 275 x 210 mm, 10.75" x 8.25", 16 attractive chromolitho plates, mainly of young children, each is preceded by a short poem part of which is reproduced on the illustration in handwritten script, some are well known rhymes such as Hush a Bye Baby & Little Miss Muffet. Woodcut illustration to title page, original publisher's dark green pictorial cloth, gilt lettering to spine, gilt and black lettering to upper cover, pictures in black and gilt to upper cover, blind rules to lower cover, all edges gilt. Professionally recased keeping the original endpapers, corners worn with slight loss of cloth, head and tail of spine rubbed, pale white spotting and light scratching to covers, offset from a few plates to preceding blank page, light age-browning to margins of plates, some light fingermarks and other small marks to margins, neat ink inscription to top margin of title page, otherwise a very good copy.
