First U.S. edition, written & illustrated by Ardizzone, wonderful coloured illustrations throughout printed 1 side only. 335 x 225 mm, 13¼" x 9¾", colour illustrated boards, grey cloth spine with red cursive lettering, no pagin. Very slightly worn at tail & lower corners, neat small inscription on blank front endpaper, 1 small very pale mark in 1 upper margin. Near Fine in Good dw (dw: several small chips to edges, two larger chips to rear panel, max 40 x 30 mm, (1¼" x 1½") 10 mm (½") chip tail of spine & on top edge of front panel, 140 mm (4¼") closed tear to to front panel). This U.S. first edition is 5 mm (¼") taller and wider than the U.K. edition and it has the advantage of an cloth spine, rather than the fragile paper spine of the U.K. edition.
