Volumes 1 to 4, the Early and Middle Ages only, Volume 1 being a second edition, 225 x 145 mm, many full page and text illustrations, 2 in colour, 1716 pages including indexes and subscribers lists, bound in half calf, contrasting labels of red and green with gilt lettering between raised bands to spines, marbled boards. Bindings rubbed, corners worn, 7 pages have small closed tears to margins, not affecting text, shelf wear with edges of boards worn, age-browning and foxing, a liitle heavy in a few places, otherwise they are very good tight volumes.
