The late Isaac Deutscher's Trevelyan Lectures, delivered in the early months of the year that marks the fiftieth anniversay of the Russian Revolution, made a remarkable impact on his Cambridge audiences. Now that the six lectures are assembled in book form, we can understand the intense interest with which they were received. With masterly clarity, Deutscher surveys in a small compass the great and complex problems of half a century of Soviet history. he examines the historical perspective, the breaks in revolutionary continuity, the social structure, the stalemate in the class struggle, and the impact of the Chinese Rwvolution; and in analysing the stupendous progress achieved by a backward nation in the application of a new principle of social organization, he concludes that these fifty years point to new horizons for western society 'if it only frees itself from conservative fetishes'. 'In this sense', he ends, 'the Russian revoluton still confronts the West with a grave and challenging tua res agitur'. 115 pp.
