Author: A. P. HERBERT
Title: Pools Pilot or Why Nor You?
Description: London England, Methuen & Co, 1953. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Very Good/Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" Tall Duodecimo Hardback Hardback. First Edition. Pools Pilot. Foxing to end inside covers and edge. Shelf wear to edge of D/J. 'A national pastime', said Roman Catholic witnesses before the last Royal Commission. 'In many ways quite beneficial'. Though serious in intention, the author steers us through this 'vast, nonsensical, but most important affair' in his usual lighthearted manner. He modestly claims that there is no book like it. Others have eebn content to offer practical advice. This book charts as well the devious political history of the pools, gives some account of the legal position, and many laughable reminders of the crazy state of Britain's betting laws. He believes that the pursuit of the Pools is really a flight from Taxation: and that, whether you win or lose, it is justifiable fun. Are you 'sincere in your desire for &75,000 (tax free)' or are you one of the many for whom the football pools is miore a mathematical hobby than a hunt for money - 'a kind of crossword puzzle with a change of making a fortune'. This book provides both. Every method by which you may select and arrange the football matches necessary to win that fortune, is discussed, with all its doubts and dangers, in the long Appendix on Perms. The author does not pretend that he has won much himself - what matter. 'It's fun - but he claims that he has at least as much to show as the cards or crossword addicts. 155 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
