Previous owners name and date to inside cover. Slightly sunned spine to D/J. This essays attempts a synthesis of much recent work on the Norman Conquest. The author has been careful not to treat the Conquest as a purely English phenomenon, but to place it squarely in its Norman and English setting. The opening chapters discuss the ear;ly history of the Norman duchy and then in detail, the minority and personal rule of Duke William. Later chapters examine the feudal settlement of England, royal government and royal control of the Church, and finally the effects of the Norman Conquest on English social development. Special attention is given to recent work on ducal Normandy, and on Domesday book and its problems. 212 pp.
