Title: Theodor Herzl, Artist and Politician
Description: London England, Hamish Hamilton, 1974. First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall 0241024471 Harback Hardback. Slight mark to top edge. Slightly sunned spine to D/J. Theodor Herzl, know to history as the founder of political Zionism, has long been buried in myth and apocryphal legend, a shadowy Superman. Now in this objective biography the author traces Herzl's tortuous route in Vienna, Paris and the major capitals of turn-of-the-century Europe. We see Herzl evolve from a duelling student, an aspiring playwright and a sophisticated journalist to the man who decides, in the summer of 1895, to set himself at the head of a movement of the Jews. Although indifferent to religion for most of his life, his European experience made him bitterly aware of how Jews were suffering from anti-Semitism. A blend of concern for what he now saw as his people and thwarted personal ambition inspired him to devote himself to the Zionist movement - which, forty-years after his lead, led to the procloamtion, under his portrait, of a Jewish state in Palestine. Herzl ended his life as a successful politician and it is in this role that he has been remembered. In fact he was a complext, frustrated man, very different from his stereotyped image. Through Herzl's own journals and letters, the author reveals for the first time intimate details of his private life, which decisively influenced his career: constant ill-health; lack of the artistic success he sought; his wretched marraige to a wealthy woman whose values he despised. Illustrated. 395 pp.
