First Edition, Binding: Cloth, Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall Harback Hardback. Slightly sunned spine to D/J. Price clipped to D/J. This is the first definitive biography of Sir Edward Nicholas, Secretary of State to Charles I and afterwards to Charles II. Sir Edward was born at Winterbourne Earls near Salisbury. During his long life, and because of the offices he held, he came into contact with most of the well-known men and women of his time, as for instance, prince Rupert, Edward Hyde, and Elizabeth of Bohemia. He followed the Prince of Wales, afterwards Charles II, into exile and even in the darkest days when Charles I had been executed and his son seemed certain to take the advice of unworthy men, Sir Edward remainded steadfast for the Crown. After the restoration, deprived of office through age and the intrigues of the Court, he went into retirement at his house in Surrey and died full of years and honour in 1669. From his offical and unoffical papers now scattered among various collections his descendant has been able to build up a living portrait of this distinguished man of the seventeenth century. Illustrated. 336 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.) .
