A catalogue (written in Japanese) of an exhibition of emaki in the Tokyo National Museum in 1974. The exhibition displayed 125 representative works of emaki (all illustrated in this book) ranging in age from the end of the Heian period through the Medieval and Pre-modern Ages to contemporary Japan, classified into literary romances, war stories, legendary tales, portraits, engi (origin and history of temples and shrines), biographical stories of high priests and other categories, in order to give a survey of the characteristics and currents of Yamato-e ("Japanese-style painting") as typified by these scrolls.
