6548: "PITCAIRN: THE ISLAND, THE PEOPLE, AND THE PASTOR; WITH A SHORT ACCOUNT OF THE MUTINY OF THE BOUNTY. SECOND EDITION. 'ADDITIONAL INTELLIGENCE RESPECTING PITCAIRN AND THE ISLANDERS'" - "16mo., Second Edition, with an engraved frontispiece, 10 engraved plates and an engraved chart, plates lightly spotted, neat contemporary inscription on half-title, embossed personal stamp on front free endpaper and half-title; original pictorial red cloth blocked in gilt and blind, gilt back, neatly rebacked with old backstrip gilt laid down, a very good, tight, clean copy. First published earlier the same year, this is arguably the best mid-nineteenth century account of the aftermath of the mutiny. Its publication was stimulated by a resurrection of public interest in the 'Bounty' saga following the visit to England in 1850 of the Pitcairn Pastor George Nobbs. The work includes considerable detail on the fate of the mutineers, their descendants and the present population; this edition benefits from 'additional intelligence respecting Pitcairn and the Islanders'. SCARCE IN ANY EARLY EDITION"

With 4pp publisher's catalogue bound in at end, and the binder's ticket of Trickett & Son on rear paste-down. With a relevant postcard and cutting loosely inserted. First published in 1853, this is arguably the best mid-nineteenth century account of the aftermath of the mutiny. It is a near fine copy on laid paper, uncut and unopened.A highly regarded military manual, first issued in 1759, whose influence extended far beyond the boundaries of Norfolk and indeed of Great Britain. An adaptation of this considerably enlarged issue for use by the militia of Massachusetts Bay was published in Boston later in 1768, and editions for the militias of Connecticut and New Hampshire appeared in 1769 and 1771 (see Sabin 104749-55).Colonel William Windham (1717-1761) spent much of his life on the Continent and served for a time as an officer in one of Queen Maria Theresa's regiments of hussars. Upon his return to England he supported vigorously Pitt's scheme for a national militia in 1756, and aided the Marquis of Townshend in forming the Norfolk militia in 1757.Viscount Townshend (1724-1807) joined the Army in 1745, served at Culloden the following year and received Montcalm's surrender of Quebec in 1759.George Townshend (1753-1811), the author's eldest son, was created Earl of Leicester in 1784 and in 1807 succeeded his father as 2nd Marquis Townshend.THIS IS AN EXCEPTIONAL FAMILY COPY, IN REMARKABLY CLEAN, BRIGHT AND FRESH STATE WITH BROAD TEXT MARGINS AND ONLY THE MOST NEGLIGIBLE AGE-STAINING. THE PLATES, IN PARTICULAR, ARE A MAGNIFICENTLY PRESERVED SUITE OF ENGRAVINGS.Rare; ESTC lists six copies, at least two of which are apparently imperfect."

7550: "PRELIMINARY ARTICLES OF PEACE, BETWEEN HIS BRITANNICK MAJESTY, THE MOST CHRISTIAN KING, AND THE CATHOLICK KING. SIGNED AT FONTAINEBLEAU, THE 3RD DAY OF NOVEMBER, 1762. PUBLISHED BY AUTHORITY. DEFINING THE CONCLUSION OF THE SEVEN YEARS' WAR" - "24pp., 4to., First and Sole Edition, on laid paper, elaborate woodcut device on title, woodcut head- and tail-pieces, parallel text in French and English printed in double columns, some mild age-staining (rather heavier on title), a few leaves lightly dog-eared; now preserved in custom-made folding board portfolio, paper label on backstrip. THE OFFICIAL ENGLISH PUBLICATION OF THE PRELIMINARY ARTICLES OF PEACE BETWEEN ENGLAND, FRANCE AND SPAIN THAT LED TO THE CONCLUSION OF THE SEVEN YEARS' WAR. The Seven Years' War (1756-1763) was effectively the first 'world war', involving most major European nations in warfare in Europe, Canada, the US, India and the Caribbean. The North American phase of the conflict is commonly known in the US as the 'French and Indian War'. The preliminary articles here detailed were signed at Fontainebleau on 3 November 1762 by the Duke of Bedford (for George III of England), the Duke of Praslin (for Charles III of Spain) and the Marquis de Grimaldi (for Louis XV of France). The articles were ratified by the Treaty of Paris on 10 February 1763. Under its terms, Britain gained from France the entire province of Canada, all Louisiana east of the Mississippi, Cape Breton and all the islands in the St. Lawrence. France retained fishing rights in the St. Lawrence with the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon as a base. In the West Indies Britain gained Tobago, Dominica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, but returned Guadaloupe, Martinique, Desirade and St. Lucia to France. In the Mediterranean Britain exchanged Belle Isle for Minorca. In Africa Senegal was retained and Goree returned. In India, France recognised the supremacy of the British East India Company and effectively withdrew from colonial competition in the sub-continent. Britain and Spain exchanged the Floridas and the Bahamas. As can be seen the settlement redrew the geopolitical world map and marked the beginning of an extensive period of British dominance outside Europe. Extremely scarce."
