BROWN (T), CAPT., ED.: The Natural History of Selborne, with Observations on various Parts of Nature, and The Naturalist's Calendar. With Notes by Captain Thomas Brown. A New Edition [Captain Thomas Brown's Second Edition]. APPARENTLY UNRECORDED 'BROWN' EDITION Orr & Smith, 1834 8vo., Second Edition thus, with an engraved frontispiece and 7 engraved plates, some light and inoffensive foxing, neat early nineteenth century signature on blank preliminary; contemporary full calf, sides with decorative frame border enclosing an arabesque all in blind, gilt back, all edges gilt, gilt doublures, backstrip very lightly sunned else a most attractive copy in period binding. Brown's notes are on an extensive scale, almost rivalling in extent the original matter. The first 'Brown' edition was published in 1833 and there were numerous later re-issues to the turn of the century. A feature of the 'Brown' versions is that the two series of letters are arranged in strict chronological order instead of in the manner of the original edition, which kept the letters to Pennant distinct from those to Barrington. This copy is something of a bibliographical puzzle. Whilst it follows closely Martin's collation (see p.123-124) there are several important departures. It is small 8vo., rather then 12mo., the publisher is given solely as 'Orr & Smith of Amen Corner, Paternoster Row', there is no 'Directions' slip, and the printer's imprimatur appears only once (at the foot in the last page of the Index) with no repeat on the title verso. Whilst Martin records that there were two additional printings of the first Brown edition in 1833, he makes no mention of any alternative issues of the second Brown edition. Yet this copy clearly precedes the third Brown edition (of the same year, 1834) since by then the publisher was Fraser, Smith Elder and Curry.Very attractive copy of an uncommon and apparently unrecorded edition.See Martin, pp.121-124.
