Pennington, 1796 8vo., Sixth Edition, with a fine engraved frontispiece, an engraved plate and a folding engraved map, some very light offsetting from frontispiece to title; contemporary half calf, marbled boards, back ruled in gilt with red leather label lettered in gilt, joints very lightly rubbed else a notably fresh, crisp, clean copy in well-preserved period binding. A splendid copy, complete in every particular with the decorative half-title, decorative divisional title to the addenda, and 3 pages of publisher's advertisements at end. This classic work, 'the earliest guide to picturesque mountain scenery', was first published in 1778.The frontispiece depicting Grasmere is by Caldwall after Feary; the view of Lowdore (first appearing the previous edition of 1793) is by Byrne after Farington. The fine map is engraved by Paas after a sketch by A. Walker. In the addenda to this edition 'Some remarks on the provincial words' is replaced by 'Mrs Radcliffe's description of the scenery in a ride over Skiddaw'.Anderson, p.30; Bicknell, 13.6; Hodgson, p.289; oddly, Upcott records only the tenth edition of 1812.
