Author: (BLANCHE MCMANUS). F. MILTOUN.
Title: "Castles and Chateaux of Old Navarre and the Basque Provinces. Including also Foix, Roussillon and Bearn. With many Illustrations reproduced from Paintings made on the Spot by Blanche McManus. THE SCARCE UK EDITION"
Description: "Sir Isaac Pitman, 1908" "8vo., First UK Edition, with a coloured frontispiece (overlay on japon captioned in red), title in red and black, 7 fine coloured plates (with overlays on japon captioned in red), 32 plates in monochrome, 11 illustrations, 9 maps and a double-page pedigree in the text, a folding map on japon, and front and rear pictorial endpapers in red and black, neat contemporary signature on half-title; original and elaborate pictorial cloth richly blocked in gilt and colours, pictorial back blocked in gilt and colours, gilt top, uncut, upper hinge cracked and short split in lower joint (but binding entirely sound), else a very good, bright, crisp copy. This classic study is one of the best of the several turn-of-the-century travel collaborations between Miltoun and his wife McManus (other contenders would certainly include the volumes on Touraine and Burgundy in the same series).Curiously little seems to be known of McManus save the bare facts of her professional career and oeuvre, yet her prowess in the Arts & Crafts school of the period is clear for all to admire. And it is the travel books which seem to lead the way in popularity over some of her more conventional output (her Kipling and Carroll volumes, for instance). This work was first published by Page of Boston in the previous year. The UK edition (which must have had a tiny run) is actually very scarce, especially in this condition."
