New, 1738" "12mo., Fifteenth Edition, with an engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, and 12 engraved plates (one standing at the head of each book), some light age-staining (a little heavier on last few leaves), late eighteenth/early nineteenth century inscription on frontispiece recto; contemporary speckled calf, sides with double frame border in gilt, expertly rebacked in calf to style, back with five raised bands, original leather label lettered in gilt preserved, new endpapers to style, a clean and most attractive copy. The main work is complete with the following preliminaries: Dedication [by Tonson] to the Rt. Hon. John, Lord Summers, Baron of Evesham; Fenton's Life of Milton; 3pp Postcript; 'In Paradisum Amissam' by Samuel Barrow; 'On Paradise Lost' by Marvell; the 2pp introduction to 'The Verse'. The frontispiece is engraved by Fletcher. The fine plates by John Baptist Medina (engraved chiefly by Michael Burgesse) are taken from Tonson's first folio edition of 1688.
