Edited by James Paton] Glasgow, 1890 Folio, armorial title in red and black, with a fine coloured frontispiece, 30 fine plates in collotype and heliogravure ON JAPANESE PAPER and 287 lithographed illustrations and facsimiles in the text, patterned endpapers, armorial buckram gilt, gilt back, gilt top, uncut, covers very slightly cockled at leading edges, corners bruised, upper hinge weak but quite sound, internally a very good, clean copy. This collection of national memorials, the largest and most important ever assembled in Scotland, was brought together in the 'Bishop's Castle', a reproduction of the ancient Castle of Glasgow designed by James Sellars for the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888. The collection includes substantial holdings covering arachaeology, historical and personal relics, Scottish literature, burghal memorials and exhibits depicting Scottish life under the headings military, industrial, domestic, torture and punishment, charms and amulets, and communion tokens. The outstanding collotype plates are by Maclure and Macdonald, the heliogravures by Walker & Boutall, and Annan, and the lithographs by M'Lagen & Cumming Offered for GBP 165.00 = appr.
