Title: Report from the Select Committee on Westminster Bridge and New Palace
Description: London, House of Commons. 1846. 3pp. Folio. Attractive recent cloth binding. British Parliamentary Paper HC177, bound with SECOND REPORT. 1846. HC349. 3pp, bound with THIRD REPORT. xxvi + 234pp. 11 folding plans, some hand tinted. The committee investigated the condition of Westminster bridge, and finding it to be unsafe, recommended its demolition. They also reported on the heating and ventilation of the new Houses of Parliament, adjudicating on disputes between Sir Charles Barry and David Boswell Reid. Barry had consistently resisted changes to his design to facilitate Reids plans for heating & ventilation. Reids inovative system of ventilation had proved a great success in the temporary Houses of Parliament errected following the destruction of the original Houses of Parliament in 1834. A very clean copy.
