Light mainly marginal browning, first and last few leaves with very faint signs of waterstaining, early gilt rule edged calf with blind fillet edging to boards, blind detailed compartments and gilt lettering to spine, minor wear and surface cracking to joints. Scarce. Colophon: Parisiis, Excudebat Antonius Vitray, M.DC.XXXV. Dedicated to Cardinal Richelieu; preface by Louis XIII, dated Chateau Thierry Dec. 9, 1631. Italian original published in 1597 and translated into more than sixty languages. Signatures: [pi]8, A-I8 (missigning B1 as A). Head-piece; floriated initial; royal coat-of-arms on t.p. Latin preliminary pages (dedication and imprimatur); French preface. Arabic translation of catechism with facing Latin text. Arabic translation by Maronites Victorius Scialac (Syriac: Nasrallah Shalaq al-'Aquri) (d. 1635) and Gabriel Sionita (Syriac: Jibra'il as-Sahyuni;) (1577 Ehden Lebanon 1648 Paris). OCLC 54283090. Saint Robert Bellarmine, S.J. (15421621) Italian Jesuit and a Cardinal of the Catholic Church. He was one of the most important figures in the Counter-Reformation. He was canonized in 1930 and named a Doctor of the Church. Widely remembered for his role in the Galileo affair. An abridgment of his Dichiarazione piu copiosa della dottrina christiana (1598).
