REPORT UPON EXPERIMENTS AND INVESTIGATIONS TO DEVELOP A SYSTEM OF SUBMARINE MINES For Defending the Harbors of the United States. Submitted to the Board of Engineers. Washington Government Printing Office, 1881. 1st Ed. 4to. 444pp. 28 plates. Light browning, marbled boards and edges, later half calf with marbled boards, dec. gilt edged raised bands with blind tooling to compartments and gilt lettered title labels. ¶ Professional Papers of the Corps of Engineers, US Army. No. 23. Henry Abbot was tasked to carry out trials and experiments to enable the US Corps of Engineers to use submarine mining and torpedoes for defence of US harbours. A few years later this work had been embodied in the Corps Manuals. However the trial results, which were the basis of these manuals, had not been published. This report details the trials and the results covering sub-aqueous explosives, electrical fuzing and the like. He discusses at length the problem of measuring the effect of explosions under water. Without such data it is impossible to estimate the probability of sinking a ship by sub-aqueous explosives. An important work in the scientific study of underwater explosions.
