DAVID NEWTON - Stamford Mercury: Three Centuries of Newspaper Publishing

Title: Stamford Mercury: Three Centuries of Newspaper Publishing
Description: Paul Watkins Publishing, 1999. First Edition, Softcover. Good Condition. 9781900289283 Splash stains on the side closed page block, book's contents are clean and unmarked, crease to lower corner of front cover, some shallow indents on rear. This exhaustive and pioneering study traces the history of the paper from its inception at the Stamford Post in 1710 (renamed Mercury in 1712), through to the modern tabloid of today. Its history is peppered with important national and international events, from the Jacobite risings, the American War of Independence and the French Revolution, to the reform politics of the Victorian Age and the upheavals of the First and Second World Wars. Its history is strewn with colourful figures, from Dick Turpin to John Clare, and including the owners themselves, who fought duels with their rivals to maintain the honour of their paper. The book also includes much information on printing techniques and how the news was gathered. There is also information on Stamford's occasional rival newspapers with breakthrough research on Drakard's Stamford News. The Mercury is fortunate to possess a great archive of its productions, allowing this work to have been written. Arguably, it is the best history ever published of any newspaper. Illustrated. 320 pages. Quantity Available: 1. Category: History; ISBN/EAN: 9781900289283. Inventory No: dscf8997.
