Title: 'Cham' Vicomte Amedee de Noe (1812-1879) Caricaturist Signed Note in French
Description: 0. Letter /Card. Autograph, Signed note almost fine - We have just purchased a collection of hand signed letters & cards: Military, Artists, Literature & Political figures including a number of letters in English & French circa 19th century. Born into the aristocracy, CHAM failed the entrance examination to the prestigious Ecole Polytechnic and after a period of training with Charlet and later Paul Delaroche, published his first album of sketches in 1839. The pseudonym 'Cham' refers both to his initials (Charles Henri Amedee) and to his status as son of the French count, Noe - (Noah in biblical terms) whose son Ham is known in French as Cham. As a contributor to Le CHARIVARI, Cham was by far the most prolific caricaturist, with his work being estimated to include over 40,000 published drawings - about ten times the amount of Daumier's published work. Cham remained on the staff of Le Charivari for thirty years. David Kunzle considered Cham to be a more famous figure than Daumier during the last decades of their lifetimes. Cham's reputation was recognized internationally and he collaborated with both PUNCH and the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS, although refusing an offer from Punch to move to London to work. Guaranteed posting 24hrs from St Ives in Cornwall - STY. Very Good. Signed by Author(s).
