An exceedingly crisp, clean and tight example of this work. Folio, 350x220mm, in two parts: [24] xxii 239 [3] 243-738 pages plus two leaves of plates. Engraved portraits, tables and engravings of coins in text. In contemporary brown calf with panels ruled in decorative blind tooling on both boards. Corners bumped and rubbed. Spine in compartments with six raised bands and faded lettering piece with manuscript title. Small hole at head of spine near front hinge. Foot of spine damaged with slight loss. All edges speckled red. Armorial bookplate of John Monins on front pastedown. Number 'E.H:0' manuscript in top foredge corner of front free endpaper. Added engraved title-page reads 'Apostolici or The Lives of the Primitive Fathers for the three first Ages of the Christian Church'. Typographical title-page printed red and black. Part 2 title-page reads: 'Ecclesiastici: or, The History of the Lives, Acts, Death, & Writings, Of the most Eminent Fathers of the Church, That Flourish'd in the Fourth Century. Wherein Among other Things an Account is given of the Rise, Growth, and Progress of Arianism, and all other Sects of that Age descending from it. Together with An Introduction, containing An Historical Account of the State of Paganism under the First Christian Emperors.' Part 2 has an engraved frontispiece. Includes chronological tables in both parts. 'An appendix: containing a brief account of some other eminent fathers that flourish'd in this fourth century' (pages [695]-729) has a special title page, with the imprint, London: Printed by John Barber, 1715.
