First edition, 8vo, vi, 406 pp. Inscribed from the Author on a front blank, light marginal browning throughout, recased with repair to the fly leaf. Original green cloth, some light rubbing and marks. Field moved to California in 1848 during the Gold Rush, and his successful legal practice led to a series of public roles, culminating in his appointment by Abraham Lincoln to the Supreme Court, where he is still the second longest serving judge to that body.
