Title: Ye Gilty Goddess - a Doleful Ditty
Description: Edinburgh: AT THE EXHIBITION PRINTING OFFICE T. & A. CONSTABLE, PRINTERS TO HER MAJESTY, 1886. Hardcover. 23x29cm. iLLUSTRATIONS BY THE AUTHOR. "On top of the dome of the EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL EXHIBITION of 1886 was placed a gilded Statue of FAME, imported, I believe, from Flanders. The gilty female, as she was irreverently nicknamed, did not long adorn her elevated position. Her end was pieces!.one windy day her trumpet was blown from her hand, and went crashing through the roof of the building. One of her wings also showed a decided inclination to fly in the same direction. This 'doleful ditty,' commemorative of the great tragedy, was originally written for the entertainment of the Exhibition Committees, on the occasion of a dinner in the Waterloo Rooms. I suppose the wine must have been good, for the lines were ordered to be printed for the members.EDINBURGH, October 1886." Brown boards, rubbed or moderately worn at edges, and heavily discoloured/faded in a patchy manner and also bearing several small marks; black title and black, silver and gilt illustration of the statue atop the dome on the front cover remains well defined except for the silver dome which is slightly degraded showing the brown underneath; inside covers and endpapers are a bit grubby with age discolouration to the endpapers; first title page is a black line copy of the front cover, second is just the title in black with a red Y and 2 Gs, within a red frame; every page thereafter featuring text is in the same red frame, with the first letter being red; the poem is spread over seven pages, and is followed by eleven snippets (per page) from the poem with a caricaturesque drawing of the persons mentioned on the opposite page, each page being blank on the reverse; a few pages are marked at their fore edge, and the weave shows in a few places but without feeling loose. The external condition is unfortunate for this is super-scarce.. Fair to Good .
