Selected pupils who had completed the primary school course and were 14 years of age or older, were apprenticed for a four-year period to a master teacher (usually a head teacher). The apprenticeship could be terminated if a pupil-teacher failed to pass an annual examination or if the master teacher judged that the apprentice was unsuited to the work.
