Green embossed cloth with gilt illustration of a cable-laying ship to the front board and gilt titles to the spine. Yellow endpapers lightly soiled and rippled. Small book sellers label to verso of the front board: "Callander And Dixon, Whitehaven". Printed title with a small vignette of a steam engine. Preface signed: "George Dodd. January 1867." Occasional light foxing, otherwise clean text, illustrated with 10 engravings as called for. An authoritative survey of the three great 19th century contributions to the improvement of communications.
