The age of public transport was born in Sheffield in 1834 when a horse-drawn bus service running between Sheffield and Rotherham began. Four years later, Sheffield Wicker railway station opened, heralding the hissing age of steam. In 1873, the first horse-pulled trams ran in the city, and later came the electric tram. As car ownership spread and the roads became increasingly clogged, planners looked for new ways to give people quicker access across the city. The now familiar sight of Supertram first slipped out of Meadowhall towards the city centre in 1994. Throughout the evolution of public transport, The Star and its forerunners have been there to record history in the making. Photographers have braved all weathers to take pictures of many of the key moments in the development of the city's transport network.
