Old shelf mark label and modern name label on pastedown, name stamp Sir Richard Betenson Bart at head of titlepage, licence page and title browned at edges, [8] +168pp. *Holder, a clergyman and early member of the Royal Society, here explains the mechanics of articulation. In the preface he notes that he was motivated "by a Worthy Design of giving Relief to a Deaf and Dumb Person, in the year 1659". He uses oral & written signs and applies a manual alphabet together with lip-reading (Wing H2386, Krivatsy 5935). Scarce.
