Anfangs vom Alexander Rossen in Englishcher Sprach beschrieben; nunmehro aber verbessert und mit vielem Zusatz vermehret ..von David Nerreter .Nuremberg [Germany] pr.Johann Ernst Adelbluner for, Printed by Johann Ernst Adelbluner for Wolfgang Moritz Endters 1701 2 page frontis. + 68 plates including 10 folding + text illustration thus over 70 illustrations. . Octavo vellum over thin wooden boards laced through at hinges (boards bit warped & hinges starting split/as often with vellum the book gapes slightly) 2 frontis leaves + Titlepage +[10p=dedications] +1195pp +[81p index] lacks final leaf (blank? As it says Ende at the bottom of the index) Edge tears & some creases to the two frontisplates and sl tears starting to a few folds of the folding plates. The Endpapers are creased and have a 2cm stain which in the case to the rear EP has offset to some index pages. Generally a neat tight book with signs of use but not abuse, no writing or defacing of text or plates. *This edition is the first to more than double the number of the plates and also the hugely increase the text. The English of Alexander Ross's Pancebeia was often reprinted and translated but Nerreter, using only the first parts of Pancebeia has more than quadrupled the text. He especially added to the Egyptian section and also added a great deal to the section on America & Africa. The illustrations to the Ross work were only slowly increased to 8 portraits and finally 32 portraits but our plates are of ceremonial scenes, Idols, tortures, Mayan masks, Egyptian mummies quite unlike the Ross editions (Sabin 73323).
