London, Griffith & Farran/Frankft Lit.Soc 42nd edition printed in Germany 1870s) Hand-colored illustrations by Hoffmann . 260x192mm newer cloth spine original printed boards with catalogue to lower cover (some loss of paper at edges not affecting illustrations/2 light pencil lines on cover) 23 leaves printed one side only and probably lacking the last leaf, but "Johnny look in the air" is complete. New endpapers, first & last leaf lacking part of margin (not touching any printed area) and nicely repaired with matching paper. A few other tears without loss & repaired neatly. The last dozen leaves have a gutter corner with an old ink stain that never comes near the print and almost always less than 0.5cm into margin & less than 1cm out from the sewn gutter. On last 2 leaves this ink stain increases and there is some loss of paper but never more than 1.5x2cm. The rest of book has minor edge darkening/fingering. A neat well hand-colored early copy. *The English editions printed in Germany are generally earlier than those printed by Graphotone Co. in England. The edition numbers are out of synchronization between the German and English editions. This seems to be a German 42nd edition.
